Gabriela and her family demonstrated not only the professional skills and knowledge required to care for a person with dementia, they treated Diana with compassion and care and respect. Diana became part of the greater family. She was included in family gatherings and outings, and the family made special arrangements for Diana to engage in those activities that were of special interest to her, such as opera. They let her help in the kitchen as her abilities allowed. They also took the time to identify Diana’s habits, likes and dislikes and tailored meals and appointments to fit her, for example providing her with her daily ‘dose’ of mint chocolate chip ice cream.
